First look: Marvel’s Moon Knight, She-Hulk and Ms Marvel

Yesterday was Disney day, or something. I’m not really sure what it was exactly, but it meant that Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings and Jungle Cruise turned up free on Disney+. It also meant that we got a first look at three upcoming Marvel TV shows: Moon Knight, She-Hulk and Ms Marvel. Moon Knight Let’s start with Moon Knight, starring Oscar Isaac. … Continue reading First look: Marvel’s Moon Knight, She-Hulk and Ms Marvel

My favourite teen movies (watched growing up, and as an adult)

Teen movies say something about growing up — about being a teenager, the ups and downs and highs and lows, finding one’s self on the cusp of adulthood. A time when hormones and emotions assault your senses and you’re experiencing a bunch of first times: like first love or first sexual encounter, or drink or drugs, or debauched house parties… all that stuff. So I … Continue reading My favourite teen movies (watched growing up, and as an adult)

Guillermo del Toro’s love of vivid colours, beautiful monsters and steampunk

As blog titles go, this one is quite specific. To set the scene… basically, to celebrate Halloween my partner and I have been watching spooky movies. One of those was Crimson Peak (2015) as I’d not seen it, despite being a big del Toro fan. And whilst I appreciated the movie, I didn’t love it. Mostly because the plot and characters didn’t really get me … Continue reading Guillermo del Toro’s love of vivid colours, beautiful monsters and steampunk

Chaos Walking (2021): messy and chaotic, but still fun

Chaos Walking (2021) is a sci-fi fantasy adventure with Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland, and it’s not as bad as critics say. I’m putting that out there from the start, as there are many out there that consider it a total car crash of a movie. Yet it isn’t. It’s scrappy, yes, but at least things happen. I remained entertained throughout and that has to … Continue reading Chaos Walking (2021): messy and chaotic, but still fun

The Harder They Fall (2021): a scrappy mess, but still fun

This movie is tricky. First, the good: it’s got an embarrassment of riches when it comes to the cast (Jonathan Majors, Zazie Beetz, Regina King, Lakeith Stanfield, Delroy Lindo). The soundtrack is super cool, and many of the characters get impressive entrances. The performances, as you’d expect, are all solid, with Majors shining. And yet… the movie doesn’t add up to what it promises on … Continue reading The Harder They Fall (2021): a scrappy mess, but still fun

Actors who stepped out the shadows of famous parents (2021)

Ah, escaping the legacy of one’s parents. What must that be like? I guess we all have it, to some degree. But if you want to get into acting and you have famous parents, it must be strange. Do you try and make it on your own? Do you use their name to open doors and get you meetings? Let’s say you do start to … Continue reading Actors who stepped out the shadows of famous parents (2021)

My favourite film and TV characters named Mike or Michael

Should you celebrate your name? I think so. Be proud, I say. After all, it’s your name. And thinking on my own name being one of the oldest in the world — it stands to reason that it would’ve turned up in quite a few movies and TV shows. So I decided to investigate. Here are a few favourites. Sean Astin as Mikey in The … Continue reading My favourite film and TV characters named Mike or Michael

My favourite women in film with brightly-coloured hair

Someone I know recently dyed their hair pink. It was previously purple, or maybe green or blue. I forget. Whatever it was, I remember it looked cool at the time. I always noticed it. And let’s face it, if you’ve got bright hair, weird hair, or queer hair, you’re automatically twice as interesting as the rest of us. At least in my book. It’s sort … Continue reading My favourite women in film with brightly-coloured hair

Halloween movies to watch on streaming (UK) in 2021

It’s that time of year again — spooky Christmas! For some of us, Halloween is far more interesting an occasion to celebrate than the fake birthday of Jesus. It’s the time of year for witches, magic, ghosts, zombies, werewolves, vampires, and things that go bump in the night. That time when weirdos and misfits come out to play, and everything gets a bit supernatural. If … Continue reading Halloween movies to watch on streaming (UK) in 2021
